Persian pottery and architecture with delicate mosaic works, Iran

Iran Journey

28 September to 13 October 2018

Persia; a word which has provided us with evocative images of turquoise domes, caravans laden with priceless carpets, vaulted trading domes; of poets, rose gardens and nightingales. The very names; Shiraz, Isfahan, Persepolis, breathe magic.

This magic is alive in Iran today, building on the legacies of the great rulers and dynasties, from the re-birth of Persian art under the Seljuks to the magnificence of structures rising under the Safavid Dynasty and beyond. Palaces, mosques, madrassas and mausoleums display a mesmerizing complexity with form and ornament combining to create an indivisible whole. Spectacular polychrome tiles, intricate brickwork, curling arabesques and calligraphic inscriptions attain a transcendent beauty, designed to reflect both the temporal power of the rulers who commissioned them and the heavenly glory of creation.

After the revolution of 1979 Iran was virtually hidden away as the nation underwent cataclysmic upheavals. From the tribulations the Iranians have emerged changed, and are keen to show their beautiful country to travellers once again.

Iran Journey will be escorted and managed by Julie Presser, past Principal, Adelaide Secondary School of English. Julie lived and worked in India in the mid-nineteen eighties and has also been a keen traveller to many Asian destinations since 1975. Following the completion of her Post-Graduate Certificate “Including Studies of Asia in Curriculum” from Flinders University, she has participated in and escorted a number of study tours for educators and leaders to Thailand, Laos, Korea, China, Vietnam, Myanmar, India and Nepal, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.

What are they saying about Zen Oriental Journeys?

The care and attention that you put into planning the itinerary has resulted in a perfectly balanced and fascinating trip that has covered so much and yet has allowed time for reflection and to recharge the batteries. We have seen and experienced all the must do’s and have also been able to experience some more remote locations.

Your leadership, management and organization throughout the entire tour was simply outstanding. You are an encouraging, focused, calm, thoughtful, caring and unbelievably patient leader of people. The program you provided was unique in my (fairly wide) experience of group tours. You took us off the beaten track and introduced us to the cultures of Asia in a way never before experienced.

I had the time of my life. We all got on wonderfully well. The accommodation was brilliant. Incredible truly. Everything we did was amazing. You couldn't do anything better or put together a more amazing trip. It was brilliant. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. It will live with me for years to come. Just LOVE your trips. Uzbekistan and Rajasthan are still firmly implanted in my brain. Great work Lee. Forever indebted for your knowledge of Asia. THANK YOU.
